Falklands dispute taken to UN

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Ban Ki-Moon
Argentina has formally asked the United Nations to bring the UK into talks over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands following weeks of dispute over planned oil exploration in surrounding waters.

Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana said he asked United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to prevent more "unilateral acts" by the UK in disputed waters, and bring Britain into discussions on sovereignty. Taiana did not say whether the Secretary General had agreed to his request.

Sir Mark Lyall Grant, the UK's permanent representative to the United Nations, released a statement saying: "As British ministers have made clear, the UK has no doubt about its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands. This position is underpinned by the principle of self-determination as set out in the UN Charter.

"We are also clear that the Falkland Islands government is entitled to develop a hydrocarbons industry within its waters, and we support this legitimate business in Falklands' territory."

The Rio Group summit of South American and Caribbean nations this week released a statement backing "Argentina's legitimate rights in its sovereignty dispute with the United Kingdom relating to the Malvinas question".

The Rio Group called on Britain and Argentina to renegotiate a "just, peaceful and definitive solution to the dispute".

Desire Petroleum's Ocean Guardian oil rig began drilling 62 miles north of the Falklands on Monday 22 February.

Falklands/Argentina & countries possessing 'overseas territories' generally:

What would France do if Nova Scotia, Newfoundland or Canada decided that the tiny* Saint-Pierre and Miquelon islands- adjacent to Canada's east coast were not appropriately 'France's overseas territory'- and demanded that France relinquish them to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland or Canada??

(* less than 1/40th the land mass size of the Falklands)

How would this be viewed by France's allies?

How would Nova Scotia's, Newfoundland's and/or Canada's allies view their demanding for-themselves a postage stamp sized piece of territory that for-over-two-centuries has been France's overseas territory?

What if Brazil or Suriname decided that it was innapropriate for (South America's) French Guiana to remain a France overseas territory and demanded French Guiana for themselves- would France just say 'OK' and leave French Guiana and its EU space-industry bases?

COUNTRIES- OTHER THAN THE UK- POSSESSING 'OVERSEAS TERRITORIES' IN THE AMERICAS HAS A CENTURIES LONG- & STILL BEING WRITTEN- HISTORY!!

Observing the current- and 1980's- misbehavior of Argentina from a long ways northwest of the Falklands: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where I've resided for most of the last 42 years...

It seems highly hypocritical and counterproductive to the process of evaluating and forming appropriate opinions regarding the
Argentina-initiated Falklands fracas that developed and developing world countries' politicians, news media and commentators are not raising the fact that there are many, many countries other than the United Kingdom that still possess 'overseas territories'... and, as a general rule, these countries are not faced with demands from countries bordering or near their overseas territories to relinquish these territories...

In the rare situations that such demands have been made during the last 60 years, the usual response, for example from countries like France, has been abrupt 'indignant' dismissal...

As long as Central and South American countries continue their decades-long policies and practices of open-armed welcome to and cooperation with countries other than the UK that have 'overseas territories' in or near the Central and South American land mass- the UK's claim of rights over and responsibilities for the Falklands can only be hugely strengthened...

UK, British Commonwealth and supporting countries' politicians- as well as UN officials- ought to be raising the examples of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and French Guiana when commenting on and (if ever) deliberating the Falklands and neighboring islands situations....

it certainly does not help when the americans do stupid stunts like stabbing the uk in the back when they should be supporting their best friend ? stupid things like that just inflame the south americams and add fuel to the fire. has not america got enough problems already without insulting the british. it is already being suggested the yanks now longer wish to be friends with us and the special relationship should be withdrawn from britain and given to their new found friends in argentina. they are slowly turning the british people against them. if we are no longer worth standing up for, then i suggest the yanks have the guts to say so. and do the decent thing /withdraw all american bases from british soil.?
ask that all british military personel withdraw from afgan/iraq=
to be replacd by south american troops/ships/planes/ and just drop us . for their new friends.
i know we british are not perfect but we do try. and always stand by our friends. we would never never dream of stabbing the yanks in the back...the relationship between british and american troops and others were sealed with blood. are the south americans willing to do this.
we will never give up the falklands as long as they want us to remain. and the americans should get their backside of the fence and EITHER back the british. or dump them for their new friends. [the point of this ]
is. you never know who your friends are untill you need them.
and you never know where your enemys are comming from untill you turn your back on them . [next]
