Have we, a army, that's overstretched, under paid. badly equipped.
That's it?? the Government thinks the British army is massive and equipped superbly, paid too much, but we would think the same if we came from the same planet. No doubt the Army will have to do the bin strike the fire strike ,and any other thing cameron can think of, in the near future.
Have you noticed on the TV, how well equipped, the police are, with the personel riot equipment.
I wish I had that lot in NI in the 80's, no wonder my legs look bad, they look they been bitten by a rotweiller.
Good old tommy atkins, stabbed in the back by governments, but always there to bale the idiots out

I bet the UK government will afterwards push the police chiefs to push down overtime allocations!
Water cannon, rubber bullets should have been employed much earlier.
From a social science perspective: What are the parents doing here? I bet if the police had to shoot a looter; then they would come crying out of the woodwork "..Poor Jonny…" It makes me sick.
Simple solution for looters: Shoot on sight.
Caught after the fact; hello CCTV everywhere! 2yrs jail mandatory. Convicted immigrants to be deported (permanently) on sentencing.
Whinging do-gooders: Ignore.

"The most signed e-petition on the No 10 website is one calling for convicted rioters to lose benefit payments."
"No taxpayer should have to contribute to those who have destroyed property, stolen from their community and shown a disregard for the country that provides for them," the petition argues.
It had more than 90,000 signatures at 6am and will be referred to the backbench business committee of MPs if it gets 100,000 signatures."

Sign it, why should these scum claim benefits that you and I have to fund. This will make the cost of taking part in such feral behaviour too high.

The use of the army or members of the British Armed Force is not required as this is not a Public Disorder issues, this is criminal intent of robbery and criminal damage and not rioting.
Firstly the army have not been training since NI in the use of public disorder and this take time to train and there is not correct protective clothing, to protect them from petrol bombs. I served many a tour in NI 70s to 98, and never sure protective clothing and sure the new 95 cloth just melt when we trained in Public Order for the marching season, backing into old issues combats.
even the police don't have enough clothing, as could been seen on TV, not all Police Officers were in Riot equipment and this is one reason that the Police could not react faster, when a man in /Croydon was protecting his property or trying to put out a fire that a gang turned on him and beat him senseless and he is now in a comma. This was a question brought up in Parliament as a question to the PM (Mr D Cameron).
The use of water cannon cannot be used against small, mobile gangs hitting in many different areas making it difficult to react. Water cannons are good used against the mob in one location, attacking the Police Line. This could be said the same with using rubber bullets and could then be used as objects to throw back at Police Lines, which we used to do as civpop training our own troops and Paddy used to put razor blades in the rubber bullets.
Training the police, give them all the correct Public Order equipment and use the Armed Forces as a very last resort.
Good old Tommy Atkins, would just get on with it as he as always has done and will always do.
I agree with this one Shaun - Ex-RNZN

I know water cannon would not have worked against kids running through crowded streets but in many cases there were large gangs taunting police and throwing bricks and stones at them forcing them to withdraw. In those cases hosing them down with water cannon would work and they could have helped with some of the properties being set alight especially as it took ages till any fire services were able to get to them. I believe water cannon would have been useful and is required.
There needs to be strict sentencing and as my previous statement said take their benefits away and evict them from council property. If they are not British citizens then deport them as well.

I agree David C has no idea. Having the army or another service on the streets is not the solution. The police should be enabled to take the necessary measures to secure the streets. If David C is going to use the army, perhaps he should talk to the Syrian President on how it works!
I note TV coverage showing 'charged' individuals walking out of court hearings! The judicial system is where some blame must be attributed too; since it is a waste of police resources to apprehend the criminal; if they (the judicial) let them go.
The world is just one big nanny state…

We are not a nanny state.... Grandparents, Nanna's and privately paid Nanny's deal with wayward children more effectively!!!
I can remember staying at my Grandmothers and knowing full well I'd get a clip round the ear if I was a little swine....
The state is just a spineless fool that bends over for these people because they have achieved such "mass" that they are now a large portion of the voters...
It's quite an alarming issue. I'm only 23 as well so this isn't an old person saying "back in my day"!!

I got out the same time as you (Aug 2010 after 24 years service) and can tell you we did a lot of Public order training prior to going to Bosnia and Iraq, so the Army is up to speed, I just don't think they should, you know as well as I do that these Youth's could not cope with speed, skill and more importantly the Aggression that Army units would show. I fear that Public Interest Lawyers would have a field day with Squaddies after such incidents.
