Ashcroft given veterans' transition role

07 September 2012

Conservative peer Lord Ashcroft is to review the support available for military veterans returning to civilian life and advise the government on how to improve the transition process, it has been announced.

Ashcroft has been appointed the Prime Minister's Special Representative for Veterans' Transition and will work across several government departments in the unpaid role.

He is set to review the current support available to veterans leaving the forces and will advise the Prime Minister, Defence Secretary and cabinet committee on armed forces and veterans.

In May 2011 Ashcroft was involved in a review of the UK's Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, and earlier this year conducted a poll which found that 21 per cent of service personnel had been verbally abused while wearing their uniforms in public.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said Ashcroft had "a long-standing and deep interest in the Armed Forces and a track record of support for veterans".

Ashcroft? Would've made more sense if it was Lord Paddy Ashdown.

Retaining their/an ID card
When joining, Service personnel are told that they are becoming members of one of the most exclusive "clubs" in the world and they are given their ID card. When they leave it is cut up before them.
The impact of this may be psychological but transition would be helped enormously psychologically and practically, if Veterans were given some unique ID card similar to the MOD 90 which could be utilised practically and culturally.

What is so hard in issuing an veterans ID CARD it is a peace paper or plastic but it means a greag deal to those who have served this nation and the cost factore is so minute it questions why the government cannot commite to this small but to the veteran emence recognition of His/Her service,is it to much
For the Premier Minister to step in and just say to the administators stop messing about and issue the the
Id card and do it now.
