German base to sell Greggs pastries

17 September 2012

High Street bakery firm Greggs is launching a trial pastry counter at a British military base in Germany as part of a new deal with NAAFI, it has been announced.

The deal will see Greggs frozen pies, pasties and sausage rolls available in Gutersloh, Germany, where NAAFI staff will be trained to cook and serve the pastries at a branded pastry counter.

The seven varieties on offer are being made available after troops serving abroad reportedly cited Greggs as the UK brand they missed the most while overseas.

Pastries included in the trial include sausage rolls, steak bakes, chili bakes and sausage and bean melts.

Mike Chapman, head of customer service for NAAFI, said: "We are delighted to be able to bring customers the taste of home that they have been asking for. Greggs is one of the most popular brands on the UK High Street for its iconic sausage rolls and pasties, and our customers want us to deliver that to them during their NAAFI break."

Greggs chief executive Ken McMeikan said the firm could expand the scheme to other British bases if the trial proved to be a success.

The shape of things to come if we lose our defence industry to EADS? Journalist doomed to write reports on bakers selling pies to soldiers.

This article is worthy of the Royal Navy's new worthless website of spin and nonsense.

British to sell Defence Industry

Martin Bayliss - with the profits to be made, they're practically giving it away! Trebles all round!

On topic - let's hope the pasties aren't too warm, wait for them to cool down and charge our service personnel less tax. They can't hide in a tax haven, unlike some less patriotic types.
